Australia to See Increased Flight Frequency as Etihad Airways Boosts Sydney Service to Twice Daily

ABU DHABI / RankWire.AI / — National carrier Etihad Airways revealed it will escalate its Abu Dhabi to Sydney flights from once to twice daily starting 15th December 2026. As detailed by the Emirates News Agency, this strategic move adds four weekly flights to the airline’s current schedule of 10, resulting in a total of 14 weekly services in time for Australia’s busy summer holiday period. This increase enhances international passenger links between Australia and major markets in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent, while also supporting global trade flows.

Etihad Airways expands Australia service with daily Sydney flights
Airline flight operations managers evaluate global flight schedules inside air control hubs.

The announcement confirms that Etihad Airways will double its Abu Dhabi to Sydney flights from July 15, transitioning from a single daily flight to a double daily operation. This change raises the weekly non-stop flights between Zayed International Airport and Sydney Airport from seven to 14. The decision to add seven more flights each week is driven by the rising demand for direct premium and economy transit options connecting Australia, the Middle East, and Europe.

To facilitate the expanded schedule, the airline will utilize its state-of-the-art Boeing 777-300ER aircraft equipped with a two-class cabin layout suitable for high-capacity passenger travel. This aircraft deployment will significantly increase the total number of seats available on the route, providing thousands of additional seats each week in both directions. Flight timings have been confirmed, with flight EY454 leaving the UAE late at night and arriving in Australia the following evening, while the return service EY455 will operate as an overnight flight.

Enhanced Flight Frequencies to Strengthen Global Connectivity

Arik De, Chief Revenue Officer at Etihad Airways, stated that the move to double the Sydney flights underscores the airline’s strong commitment to the Australian market and its ongoing efforts to broaden options for international travelers. He emphasized that this increase offers passengers more flexible schedules and improved access to the airline’s expanding global network via its hub in the United Arab Emirates. The new daily operations enable travelers to make more efficient connections to major cities across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas without long layovers.

This service frequency increase aligns with broader growth trends in the Gulf’s aviation sector, where hub carriers are expanding and restoring their international route networks. Industry experts note that operating double-daily flights is crucial for remaining competitive on long-haul routes linking Asia-Pacific hubs with Western markets. By raising the frequency, Etihad Airways is bolstering its share of the Australian market, complementing its existing daily flights to Melbourne and expanding its overall capacity across the continent.

Deployment of Boeing 777 Aircraft to Expand Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The schedule increase also benefits cargo operations, allowing Etihad Cargo to provide greater belly-hold freight capacity for trade between Australia and international markets. This boost supports two-way trade, facilitating the movement of perishables, pharmaceuticals, and high-value consumer products. The consistent operation of two daily flights ensures reliable, predictable freight capacity on a fixed timetable throughout the year.

As the expanded schedule is implemented, Etihad Airways’ twice-daily Abu Dhabi to Sydney flights will seamlessly connect with partner airlines and regional carriers serving Australia. Travel agents and passengers can immediately book the new flight options through digital sales channels, global distribution systems, and direct ticketing platforms. This operational growth marks a significant milestone in the airline’s strategic network development, cementing its position as a leading international carrier linking Australia to the world.
